CEW Background and Implications

Background for Pennsylvania Educators

Implications for Students with Significant Disabilities

Career Portfolio – In accordance with the CEW standards, a career portfolio is “an ongoing, individualized collection of materials (electronic or hard copy) that documents a student’s educational performance, career exploration, and employment experiences over time. While there is no prescribed or standard format that a career portfolio must take, it typically includes a range of work, containing assignments by the teacher/counselor and selections by the student. It serves as a guide for the student to transition to postsecondary education/training, or the workplace, or both.”

Do students with significant cognitive disabilities have to create a Career Portfolio?

Yes, this requirement applies to ALL students.

Do students with significant cognitive disabilities have the same expectations as other general education students regarding the evidence collection and reporting?

Evidence should be individualized to meet student needs and learning styles and can be adapted for specific student populations.  Special education students can include meeting transition or life-skills acquisition goals as evidence.  The IEP or transition plan itself is not acceptable evidence, but progress monitoring data and any artifacts generated in student work toward the completion of the goals are acceptable.
